Please note: In July 2023, we upgraded the Gradescope integration to LTI 1.3. No data within Gradescope was lost, but due to the upgrade, links in pre-Summer 2023 Canvas sites will no longer work. You can access your previous Gradescope courses directly by going to gradescope.com/auth/saml/princeton.

The workflow to create a course and assignment is similar to before. Please see the instructions below for more details, and reach out to McGraw's instructional design team at canvas@princeton.edu for any Canvas and Gradescope-related questions.

How to create a new Gradescope course

How do I create a new Gradescope course?

To create a new Gradecope course, follow the steps below.

1. Go to your Canvas course, and select Gradescope in the course navigation menu.
2. Choose the first option to link with A new Gradescope course.
3. Then click Link Course to go to Gradescope's Edit Course page (where you can edit the course settings, such as Term, Year, etc.)
4. Click Update Course to finish creating the course.

How to create a new Gradescope assignment

How do I create a new Gradescope assignment?

From Canvas, there are now two options to create a new Gradescope assignment. Option 1 is a new and more user-friendly enhancement that takes you directly to Gradescope.

Option 1: From the Assignments drop-down menu (NEW)

1. From your Canvas course, go to Assignments in the course navigation menu.
2. Click the "3 dots" next to +Assignment and select Gradescope from the drop-down menu.
3. From the page that displays, you can choose to create a new assignment or link to an existing assignment (see screenshot below).
4. Select A new Gradescope assignment and click Link Assignment.
5. On Gradescope's assignment page, choose an Assignment Type (Exam/Quiz, Homework/Problem Set, Bubble Sheet, Programming Assignment, or Online Assignment).
6. Use the Create Assignment workflow to customize the assignment settings, then click Create Assignment.

Option 2: Via the External Tool

You can continue using the original workflow if it is your preferred process.

1. Go to Assignments in the course navigation menu.
2. Click +Assignment to create a new Canvas assignment.
3. For Submission Type, select External Tool from the list.
4. Click Find to search and Select Gradescope from the list.
5. You will be prompted to create A new Gradescope assignment (or link to An existing Gradescope assignment).
6. Use the Create Assignment workflow to customize the assignment settings, then click Create Assignment.

How to reuse a Gradescope LTI 1.0 course in the Gradescope LTI 1.3 integration?

Follow the 4-step instructions below to duplicate a previous Gradescope course and reuse it in a new Canvas course.

Step 1: Duplicate a previous Gradescope course

1. Go to gradescope.com/auth/saml/princeton to access previous Gradescope courses.
2. From the Gradescope dashboard, select the previous course that you wish to duplicate.
3. Go to the Course Settings. click Duplicate Course at the bottom of the page.
4. Make sure to edit the Term, Year, and Term Start Date to match the new Canvas course.
5. Click Duplicate.
6. On the Edit Course page, edit the Course Number and Course Name to match the new Canvas course.
7. Click Update Course.

Step 2: Link Canvas and Gradescope course

1. Go to the new Canvas course and select Gradescope in the course navigation menu.
2. You will be prompted to link your Canvas course with your Gradescope course.
3. Select link with An existing Gradescope Course, then search and select the new Gradescope course that was duplicated in Step 1.
4. Click Link Course, then click Update Course at the bottom of the Edit Course page.

Step 3: Link Canvas and Gradescope assignments

1. Go to Assignments and click the "3 dots" next to +Assignment.
2. Select Gradescope from the drop-down menu.
3. Select link with An existing Gradescope Assignment, then search and select an existing assignment from the list.
4. Click Link Assignment.

Note: You will need to repeat Step 3 to link all Canvas assignments to the corresponding assignments in Gradescope. This ensures that Gradescope scores will be passed back to the correct Canvas assignment when you sync grades in Gradescope.

Step 4: Sync Course Roster

1. From the linked Gradescope course, go to Roster to the left.
2. Click Sync Canvas Roster.
3. Then click Sync Roster to bring Canvas student enrollment to the Gradescope roster.

How to re-link Gradescope assignments that were copied using the Canvas Import Tool

What action shall I take if I copy my previous Canvas course containing Gradescope assignments?

If you use the Course Import Tool to copy previous Canvas course content to a new Canvas course, you will need to create a new corresponding Gradescope course with new Gradescope assignments. Additionally, you need to edit and re-link the imported Canvas/Gradescope assignments with the corresponding assignments in Gradescope.

Step 1: Create a new Gradescope course

1. Go to Gradescope in the left Canvas course navigation menu.
2. Select link with A new Gradescope course and click Link Course.
3. On the Edit course page, verify and edit the course information, such as Term, Year, etc.
4. Click Update Course to complete creating the new course.

Step 2: Re-link the imported Gradescope assignments

1. Go to Assignments in the course navigation menu, click the "3 dots" next to an assignment, and select Edit.
2. Select More Options to edit the assignment.
3. For Submission Type, use Find to search and select Gradescope from the list.
4. Select link with A new Gradescope Assignment and click Link Assignment.
5. On the Gradescope assignment page, select an Assignment Type (Exam/Quiz, Homework/Problem Set, Bubble Sheet, Programming Assignment, or Online Assignment).
6. Use the Create Assignment workflow to customize the assignment settings, then click Create Assignment.
7. Your Canvas assignment is successfully re-linked to Gradescope using the new Gradescope LTI 1.3 integration.

Note: You will need to repeat Step 2 for each Canvas/Gradescope assignment.
