Princeton Connect Overview

In Short

Princeton University's has two Canvas environments: Princeton University and Princeton Connect. The two environments have separate purposes, user authentication systems, and settings.

Princeton University is our main instance and houses all course offerings and degree-related course sites for Princeton students.

Princeton Connect is our secondary instance and houses our outreach initiatives and community offerings. The participants in a Princeton Connect site might include people from our other universities or institutions.

Princeton University (Primary)

  • Used for all instructional credit bearing courses (term and non-term based) and resources or activities that support a student’s degree completion.
  • Sub-accounts correspond to academic departments and centers.
  • Course creation and enrollment data is integrated with the Student Information System (PeopleSoft)
  • Princeton users must authenticate through CAS.
  • Allows flexible enrollment options for manually created (non-SIS) courses.

Access to Princeton Connect

When users log in to the Princeton University instructional instance, they should see all the Princeton Connect courses they're enrolled in.

Most non-Princeton users will have access only to the Connect instance unless they need access to a site in the Princeton University instance. For example, community auditors, guest instructors, etc.

Non-Princeton users participating in a Registrar-based course (i.e. Community Auditor, Guest Instructor, etc.) will access their courses through the Princeton University instance. All other non-Princeton users will access their courses through the Princeton Connect instance.
